
Italian coastguard rescued about 1,100 illegal immigrants aboard boats in the Strait of Sicily on Sunday while trying to reach Europe.
The coastguard said in a statement that immigrants were picked up from eight rubber boats, one large boat and two punts through 11 rescue operations in the Mediterranean sea.
The International Organisation for Migration announced Friday that some 105,34
2 migrants have arrived in Italy by boats this year, many of them setting sail from Libya.
An estimated 2,726 men, women and children have died over the same period while trying to reach Europe, often aboard small boats unsuitable for such trips.
