Italian navy rescues 1079 boat migrants

Overall 1,079 migrants including 64 minors and a newborn, were rescued by Italian Navy ships over the last 72 hours in the Strait of Sicily.The last migrants arrived Sunday on a boat in difficulty spotted by helicopters under the surveillance-and-rescue Mare Nostrum operation, Italian news agency(ANSA) reported Monday.The San Giusto ship and frigate Espero rescued the first boat, saving 244 migrants including 41 women and 11 minors; the Aliseo frigate and Stromboli ship helped a second boat together with cutters operated by port authorities, saving 263 migrants including 30 women, 35 minors and a newborn.Out of the 1,709 migrants, 816 are on board the San Giusto ship which will take them on Tuesday to Augusta in Sicily; the remaining 263 will be taken to a port yet to be determined.
