Italy on Tuesday recalled its envoy to India over dispute on the trial of two Italian marines charged with killing two Indian fishermen, said local TV channel Times Now. Ambassador Daniele Mancini will return to Italy immediately for consultations, the news channel quoted official sources here as saying. The Italian Foreign Ministry earlier said in a statement in Rome that Italy is protesting "a new and unacceptable delay by the Indian Supreme Court" on the trial of two marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone. They are accused of killing two Indian fishermen they mistook for pirates while guarding a cargo ship in 2012 off the coast of the southern Indian state of Kerala. Indian Supreme Court postponed its hearing scheduled for Tuesday as prosecutors are still waiting for the Law Ministry to decide whether to try the two marines under anti-piracy law or common criminal laws. The next hearing is scheduled for next Monday at the Indian apex court. Italy has asked for help from the European Union, NATO and the United Nations over the case.
