Japan approves plan to send ground troop mission to South Sudan

Japan approved Tuesday a plan to dispatch a Ground Self-Defense Force engineering unit to South Sudan to join UN peacekeeping operations and help build infrastructure there. Japan''s Defense Minister Yasuo Ichikawa will shortly issue an order to the Self-Defense Forces to prepare for the mission, Japanese (Kyodo) News Agency reported. Under the government''s plan, GSDF personnel will operate in South Sudan over a five-year period, with work to construct roads and bridges in the nation''s capital Juba and its vicinity to start from April before the rainy season starts.
