Japan, France to hold ministerial meetings

The defence and foreign ministers of Japan and France will meet next month to discuss information sharing and the joint development of defense equipment, Japan's (NHK World) reported. The 2-plus-2 meeting scheduled for January 9th will be the first of its kind between the countries. Japan hopes to launch working-level discussions with France about sharing information on exports of equipment that could be used for military purposes. Last year a French company sold China a device that helps helicopters land on ships. Japan is concerned that such exports may pose a security threat. Japanese officials also hope to agree with their French counterparts to promote the joint development of defense equipment, so as to enhance its technology and cut development costs. Security policies and global affairs will also be on the agenda. Japanese officials are expected to brief the French side on their new defense plan, and explain their position on China's Air Defence Identification Zone.
