The Japanese Self-Defense Land Forces and the USA Marines are readying to conduct their first joint military exercises on landing in the instance of a "presumed enemy attack on remotest Japanese islands". The Japanese Radio and TV Corporation reported that Japanese Self-Defense Land Forces and USA marines personnel are expected to move over the next few days to Guam and Tinian islands some two thousand kilometers in the western part of the Pacific Ocean in order to begin the exercises on board warships and helicopters gunships. The amphibious "USS Bonne Home Richard" and USS Tortuga are expected to partake in the drills. The Japanese Radio and TV Corporation stated that these drills are meant to exhibit bilateral Japanese-USA cooperation at a time when China has increased its presence in the Asia-Pacific region.
