Japan's Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and US Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday reaffirmed their countries' pledge to move forward with a contentious plan to relocate a key US base within Okinawa Prefecture, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said.
The Kishida-Kerry talks came just days after US President Barack Obama, during his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Washington, voiced concerns about a possible delay to the planned relocation of the US Marine Corps' Air Station Futenma, according to Japan's News Agency (Kyodo).
The concerns stem from a dispute in Japan over the legality of the relocation. In March, the Japanese and Okinawa prefectural governments accepted a court-mediated settlement to halt work related to the transfer of Futenma and resume talks on the relocation plan.
