Jordanian FM meets UN secretary general

Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh discussed during a meeting here last night with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon the latest developments in the region, especially the Syrian crisis and its humanitarian repercussions on Jordan, and the Middle East peace process. The Jordanian Foreign Ministry said in a press release that the meeting dealt with the situation of Syrian refugees in Jordan, who number more than 250 thousand and the economic burden borne by Jordan as a result. In a joint statement after the meeting the United Nations Secretary General called for an end to violence in Syria and support for Syrian refugees in Jordan. He said the United Nations appreciates the big role played by Jordan in hosting and supporting Syrian refugees, noting that the continuation of violence in Syria will lead to an increase in the number of refugees and ”this is an additional burden on Jordan”. Ban appeal to the international community to increase support for Syrian refugees in Jordan . For his part, the Jordanian foreign minister said there is a constant cooperation and coordination with the United Nations and the Secretary General, noting that Ban’s visit is the second to Jordan in two weeks. During his previous visit the United Nation Secretary General met with King Abdullah II of Jordan to discuss Jordanian efforts aimed to reach a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, Judeh said. He added that Ban’s present to Jordan comes as part of the humanitarian aspect and political consultations regarding the situation in Syria.
