Jordanian king Abdullah II meets president Abbas

Jordanian King Abdullah II met here today with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who is currently visiting Jordan. The Jordanian Monarch reiterated Jordan’s stand supporting the aspirations of the Palestinian people to regain their legitimate rights, represented by establishment of their independent state within the 1967 borders and with Jerusalem as its capital, based on the two-state solution, which is a Jordanian strategic national interest, and the Arab Peace Initiative, which is a historical opportunity to achieve a just and comprehensive peace. He commended the efforts of the US Administration to achieve peace in the Middle East, but warned that the continuing unilateral Israeli measures in Jerusalem and the continued construction of settlements threaten to undermine these efforts. On his part, President Abbas briefed His Majesty regarding the developments in the negotiation process, especially in regard to the final-status issues, which are a higher Jordanian interest. He also complemented Jordan’s support to the Palestinian people in all fields to establish their independent state on their national soil. The two leaders also touched upon the latest regional developments, especially the Syrian crisis, stressing the need to find a comprehensive solution to the crisis that ends the suffering of the Syrian people. During the meeting, they discussed efforts of achieving peace regarding existing Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, based on the two-state solution.
