The Independent Elections Commission (IEC) in Jordan announced the winners of the 17th Lower House of Parliament, in which 150 candidates out of 1,425 were elected. According to IEC's data, the voter turnout reached 57 percent with 1.3 million out of 2.25 million eligible voters. Sixteen female candidates won, one of which won by ballot and the 15 others were elected through the quota system. The voting process took place in accordance with the law and the applicable standards, members of the Election Network in the Arab World (ENAR) said during a press conference that was held Thursday evening, noting that the turnout started off slow and accelerated over time, especially during the last hour. Jordan had passed on July 23, 2012 the new electoral system, which raised the number of the parliamentary seats from 120 to 150, by 27 seats for the national list and 108 seats for the local constituencies, in addition to 15 seats for women's quota. In this election, 1,425 candidates, including 191 women competed for 150 seats in according to the one-vote system which allocated a single vote for the local constituency and another for the national one. The election took place amid the boycott of some opposition parties due to their objection to the adjustment made to the electoral system and other "reformist" demands. The 17th Jordanian parliamentary election comes as a continuous part of the previous 16 councils, 12 of which were dissolved, since the end of the British Mandate and the first election in October 1947
