Jurors began their first full day of deliberations Wednesday in the trial of Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger. The process could be a long one, USA Today reported. The jury is dealing with a 111-count indictment, including one count that includes 83 alleged crimes going back to the 1970s, and testimony from 72 witnesses. The former head of the Winter Hill Gang was arrested in 2011 after 16 years as a fugitive. He spent more than a decade living quietly under an assumed name in Santa Monica, Calif., with his girlfriend. On Tuesday, when they discussed the case for more than five hours, jurors asked whether the statute of limitations applied on any of the charges and were advised it did not. During almost two months of trial, jurors also heard recordings and were given charts alleged to show the structure of Bulger's organization. Many of the witnesses were criminals themselves, notably Steve "The Rifleman" Flemmi, who is serving a life sentence and described helping Bulger set up targets for homicide, including one of Flemmi's girlfriends.
