King Abdullah of Jordan receives UN official

King Abdullah II of Jordan on Thursday received the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, and discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Jordan and the Commission in respect of services provided by the Kingdom for Syrian refugees. The meeting focused on the latest developments of the Syrian crisis. King Abdullah reiterated the need for a comprehensive political solution to stop the violence and bloodshed, preserve the unity of the Syrian land and people and spare the region the dangerous repercussions of the crisis. The King reiterated Jordan's keenness to provide humanitarian and relief services for the refugees, despite its limited resources. The number of Syrian refugees in Jordan has reached nearly 600,000, he said, calling on the international community and UN organizations to shoulder their responsibilities to enable Jordan continue to provide services for the refugees. The King also urged for more support for the Kingdom as the winter approaches, especially in the northern areas, Jordan news agency (Petra ) reported . Guterres, in turn, valued Jordan's efforts to provide humanitarian and relief services for the Syrian refugees, calling on the international organizations and bodies to cooperate and coordinate to intensify efforts and provide support to Jordan to enable it to continue playing its vital role towards the refugees. He expressed appreciation for King Abdullah's wisdom in dealing with the Middle East issues, and his efforts to improve the state of security and stability in the region. Jordan, he added, plays a pivotal role in dealing with the regional issues and finding solutions to the challenges it is facing.
