The Latvian government on Tuesday confirmed Janis Sarts, the Defense Ministry's state secretary, as the new head of the Riga-based NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence (NATO StratCom COE).
Sarts is replacing Janis Karklins as NATO StratCom COE director. He is scheduled to take his new office on Sept. 1. Karklins, who is standing down from his current position on Aug. 31, will re-join the Latvian diplomatic service and become ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva.
Sarts has the work experience, qualification, knowledge and education necessary for heading the NATO Center of Excellence, the Latvian Defense Ministry said.
The NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence, which became functional in January 2014, contributes to improved strategic communications capabilities within the Alliance and Allied nations.
