Macedonia to elect new president in April

Macedonia will hold presidential elections on April 13, with a possible run-off vote to follow on April 27, parliamentary speaker Trajko Veljanovski said Saturday.It is unclear whether incumbent President Gjorge Ivanov intends to seek a second five-year term after the conservative VMRO-DPMNE party – the senior member of the governing coalition – nominated him for the role in 2009, German Press Agency dpa reported.The VMRO is at odds with its junior coalition partner, the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI), over the nomination of a presidential candidate acceptable to both parties.If the parties fail to agree on a candidate, parliamentary polls may be scheduled alongside the presidential vote.
