Malaysia on high alert after Jakarta bomb attacks

Malaysia's police are beefing up security in public areas and taking extra measures to secure border areas in the aftermath of bomb attacks in neighbouring Indonesia's capital city, local media reported on Saturday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said in a statement that Malaysia was now on "alert to the highest degree", amid concerns that global terrorism may infiltrate the country.

He said after the latest attacks in Jakarta, security measures were increased in public places like shopping malls and tourist spots.

He also said precautionary action would also be implemented at border areas to prevent possible infiltration by terrorists.

"We wish to assure the public that our personnel nationwide are on constant vigilance and we are closely monitoring the latest development to ensure that security of our people is safeguarded," he said.

Multiple blasts hit Jakarta, killing at least seven people, according to Indonesian police.
