Man gets life sentence for 4 rapes in 'night of terror' in Yorkshire

A doorman in northern England was given a life sentence Tuesday for raping two women and a teenager in a single violent night. Nicholas Totty, 26, of Rotherham pleaded guilty to four counts of rape and other charges and was given a 10-year minimum before he will be eligible for release, the Yorkshire Post reported. But the judge, Mr. Justice Henry Globe, warned him at his hearing in Sheffield Crown Court he will only be freed if the parole board is satisfied he is no longer a danger to the public. Totty, a former Navy chef, began the night of Sept. 27 with an attempted assault on a woman walking her dog in Rotherham. Two hours later, he attacked another woman, hitting her on the head and raping her, escaping on foot when someone approached. He then broke into a house where he attacked a woman, 47, and a 17-year-old girl. The teenager was repeatedly raped. Detective Superintendent Lisa Ray of the South Yorkshire Police said Sept. 27 was a "night of terror." She said the two victims attacked at home were so traumatized they have been unable to return. "Even when they move house they have still got to live with it forever. It is fair to say it will have a life-changing effect," Ray said. "I can only ever think of one other case that comes anywhere near close to this, this is the most horrific sexual-related attack I have dealt with in 20 years."
