Marine General Dunford chosen to be next Joint Chiefs chairman

U.S. President Barack Obama plans to nominate Marine General Joseph Dunford as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. media reported on Monday.
As a widely respected commander who led the Afghanistan war coalition during 2013-2014, General Dunford would succeed Army General Martin Dempsey, who is retiring this year as the top military advisor to Obama and Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.
The appointment is scheduled to be announced Tuesday, U.S. media cited officials who spoke on condition of anonymity as saying.
Like Obama and his predecessor General Dempsey, General Dunford is skeptical of long-term deployments of massive U.S. forces abroad. His appointment will need confirmation by a Senate controlled by Republicans wary of Obama's foreign policy.
If confirmed, General Dunford would be the second Marine officer to hold the top military job.
