Mekdad: Syrian government committed to chemical weapons' disposal

The Syrian government will fulfill its commitments towards the disposal of its chemical weapons, said Deputy Prime Minister Faisal Mekdad on Wednesday.In a speech broadcasted by national Syrian television, Mekdad said the Syrian government was committed to the disposal of chemical weapons and news regarding the opposite was not true.Mekdad said that the Syrian government had met commitment regarding the timetable in which the weapons should be delivered for disposal, noting that any obstruction in the process was to be blamed on others and not the regime.Syria will continue to work with the UN on this aspect and it will continue to dispose of chemical weapons, said Mekdad.On the level of the Geneva talks on Syria, Mekdad affirmed that the Syrian government will continue to be involved in the second rounds of talks, adding that any discussions on Syria should lead to the halt of "terrorism and bloodshed in the country." He lauded the Russian approach to the Syrian crisis, saying it was balanced and just.Other parties involved in the talks should support peace in Syria, said Mekdad who called on the UK and France to show a "humanitarian and civilized" approach towards the crisis in Syria.The EU should ease the economic sanctions on Syria, said the Deputy Minister, noting that the curbs were leading to the hunger and suffering of the Syrian people.
