German people bear the "an everlasting responsibility" to not forgot the Nazi-era crimes and prevent such a "dark chapter" of Nazi-committed crimes from occurring again, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday Speaking in a podcast on her personal website 80 years after Adolf Hitler came to power, Merkel said "the responsibility must be made clear to generation after generation," Her speech came a days ahead of the anniversary of the freeing of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz in 1945. "We don't forget that historic dark chapter, and will always remember it, to make us immune, so that it can never, never repeat itself," according to Merkel. She went on to call on all Germans to ensure that racism and anti-Semitism have no chance in the country any longer. "We must clearly say, generation after generation, with courage, civil courage to stand up for everybody"s beliefs, as each individual can make sure that there is no single for racism and anti-Semitism," Merkel added. "We're facing our history, we're not hiding or repressing anything. We must be confronted with this to ensure that we are a good and reliable partner in the future, as we already are today," she said.
