Militant Boko Haram suspected in attack on Bama

Suspected members of the militant Boko Haram attacked the town of Bama in Nigeria's Borno state Wednesday, government officials said. Sporadic gunfire was heard but there were no initial reports concerning casualties, the Nigerian newspaper the Daily Trust reported. In an attack Tuesday, suspected Boko Haram insurgents attacked the home of Maj. Gen. Tukur Buratai, a commander in the Niger Delta, in Buratai, the Daily Trust said. A Borno lawmaker, Ahmed Zanna, told the BBC the attack on Bama had lasted about five hours. Boko Haram, an Islamic militant group, has been fighting to impose Sharia law in Nigeria, which has large Muslim and Christian populations.
