Morocco and China initialed a memorandum of understanding on Friday in Casablanca to develop bilateral cooperation in the field of consumer protection.
Moulay Hafid Elalamy, the Moroccan Minister of Industry, Trade, Investment and the Digital Economy, and Zhang Mao, the Chinese Minister of State Administration for Industry and Trade, signed the agreement, which aims to strengthen the exchange of experiences and expertise in consumer protection between the two countries.
The memorandum is also intended to promote the effective enforcement of consumer protection laws and regulations in both countries in order to strengthen bilateral trade relations.
“This agreement is of paramount importance as it will boost economic and trade relations between the two countries,” Elalamy said, noting that Chinese traders are very interested in investment opportunities offered by Morocco in several areas.
Recalling the historical dimension of Sino-Moroccan relations, the minister stressed that these relations experienced a major push after the visit of King Mohammed VI in China in 2016.
The many partnership agreements signed between the public and private sectors of the two countries reflects the willingness of both sides to build strong economic relations based on strategic partnership, he added.
Mr. Mao explained that the memorandum of understanding covers several aspects of consumer protection, particularly online sales and purchases, indicating that his country has recently renewed its legal arsenal in this area.
Welcoming the quality of relations between the two countries, Mao noted that “the visit of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to China and the joint announcement of the establishment of a strategic partnership between the two countries created a new page in bilateral relations.”
The signing of this agreement is part of the two countries’ desire to pursue a strengthening of bilateral cooperation, enhanced recently by the launch of the Mohammed VI Tangier-Tech City project.
