NATO chiefs of defence discuss future strategy, adaptation

NATO chiefs of defense on Thursday discussed the bloc's future strategy and adaptation at the military committee meeting at the NATO headquarters.

The 28 chiefs of defense welcomed the progress of the implementation of the Readiness Action Plan, which was agreed at the 2014 Wales Summit to ensure the Alliance is ready to respond swiftly and firmly to new security challenges.

"The military advice provided today drew on the strength of NATO's unity, capabilities and responsiveness and focused on the essential measures required to further reinforce NATO's collective defense," General Petr Pavel, chairman of the NATO military committee said at the press conference.

They also reviewed the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan and exchanged views on military cooperation with Mediterranean Dialogue Partners.

Pavel added, "These frank discussions will provide additional guidance for the months ahead, in light of the challenging security environment and the fast approaching Warsaw Summit in July."

NATO's military committee meets twice a year at the level of chiefs of defense to discuss NATO operations and missions and provide military advice for the North Atlantic Council, the political decision-making body within NATO. It also meets once a year in an Allied country.
