NATO, Tunisia to strengthen security cooperation

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday underlined the importance of having regular political dialogue between NATO and Tunisia and to strengthen the scope of practical cooperation.

Stoltenberg made the remarks after meeting with visiting Tunisian Foreign Minister Taieb Baccouche on regional security.

Baccouche also met with NATO allied ambassadors at a session of the North Atlantic Council, the political decision-making body within NATO.

They exchanged views on Tunisia's partnership with NATO, in the framework of NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue, which Tunisia joined in 1994, and on common regional security challenges.

Stoltenberg said that the terrible acts of extremists demonstrated the need for NATO and partners to work even closer together.

Political consultations, cooperation in the fight against terrorism, cyber defense, defense planning and management, public diplomacy, and scientific cooperation are among the priority areas identified by Tunisia for its cooperation with NATO, the security organization said in a press release.
