The government of North Darfur province, west of Sudan, welcomed the new head of African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) Martin Ihoeghian Uhomoibhi who arrived in Al Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, on Monday to officially assume his post.
North Darfur governor Adam Mohamed Al Nahla expressed readiness, while receiving Uhomoibhi, to work with UNAMID to render its mission a success.
For his part, Uhomoibhi expressed hope for cooperation with the North Darfur government for the interest of the Darfuri people.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma announced in October the appointment of Uhomoibhi of Nigeria as Joint Special Representative for Darfur and Head of UNAMID, with responsibilities including those of African Union-United Nations Joint Chief Mediator.
