New round of talks between sudanese government, people's movement

A fresh round of talks between the Sudanese government and Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) (North Sector), which rebelled in south Kordofan and the Blue Nile areas, will kick off tomorrow in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. The movement was part of the SPLA which fought a protracted war in south Sudan before the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), was reached between Khartoum and the movement in 2005, but the war re-erupted in the two areas after the separation of the south and the foundation of the South Sudan as an sovereign state. The CPA, also known as the Naivasha Agreement, was a set of agreements culminating in January 2005 that were signed between the SPLM and the Government of Sudan. The CPA was meant to end the Second Sudanese Civil War, develop democratic governance countrywide and share oil revenues. It further set a timetable by which Southern Sudan had a referendum on its independence. The result of the referendum came in favour of independence and was followed by the declaration of the South Sudan as an independent state on the ninth of July 2011, but certain issues remained pending such as border demarcation, oil, relations with the newly born state and the status of the SPLM in north Sudan. Amid that tense situation, due to the pending issues, northern members of the SPLM protested against failure to enforce the so-called popular advisory on the status of the Blue Nile and South Kordofan areas after the independence of the south. The SPLM (North Sector) called for the implementation of certain provisions included in the CPA but failure to reach a solution to the two areas problems causes an armed conflict to erupt anew and led to clashes between the SPLM (North Sector) and the Sudanese Government. The war resulted in humanitarian repercussions that prompted the United Nations to put pressure on both parties by assigning the African Union to play a mediation role between the northern parties (the Sudanese government and the SPLM (North Sector)) and it became evident that a UN resolution in this respect showed a remarkable relation between the pending issues between the Sudan and the State of South Sudan and the implications of the south Kordofan and the Blue Nile crises.
