Obama outspent Romney in June

US President Barack Obama spent nearly $58 million in June, much more than any previous candidate at this point in the campaign, disclosure forms show. Disclosure forms filed with the Federal Election Commission reveal Obama's campaign spent nearly twice as much in June as likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney's campaign, which spent $27.4 million, The Washington Post reported Friday. Romney and affiliated party committees had $170 million cash on hand at the end of June to $147 million for Obama and the Democrats. The Hill reported Obama's campaign spent $32.2 million for television ads and $4.5 million for online ads in June. The Romney campaign spent $10.4 million for ads during the month, the Washington publication said. The FEC reports show Obama has relied more on smaller contributions and keeps most of his money under the control of his campaign. Romney, by contrast, has concentrated more on high-dollar donors and keeps most of his money at the Republican National Committee. But Romney has increased the proportion of money from small donors, regarded as a barometer of grass-roots support, the Post said. In June, his campaign and the RNC raised 22 percent of their money from donors who gave less than $200 at a time, compared with 14 percent a month earlier.
