President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain on Wednesday pledged to fight against terrorism and praised his country's security forces.
Speaking at a military parade to mark Pakistan's Republic Day at a stadium in Islamabad, President Hussein said that an ongoing military operation against militants in the northwest of the country had reached its "final phase". He said that the nation has offered great sacrifices not for the establishment of the country but to make sure that Pakistan flourishes as well.
The President praised the security and armed forces saying that their spirits mark higher than the mountains. Enemies had not expected Pakistan to set off on a journey as rewarding as it has been owing to the hardworking nation, he added. He underlined that Pakistan wants friendly ties with neighboring countries however, the goodwill should not be taken as weakness.
The event was held amid tight security, with authorities disabling mobile phone services in the city to thwart possible attacks. During the rally, attended by several thousand people, Pakistan displayed nuclear-capable weapons, tanks, jets, drones and other weapons systems.
