The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif has ordered the Interior Secretary to ask the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in writing to conduct an emergency inquiry into the acts of former President, Pervez Musharraf on November 3, 2007. Musharraf was alleged to declare emergency and sacking the judges of the superior courts on November 3 leading the government to file a high treason case against the former military ruler. Musharraf has to face number of cases against him as he came to Pakistan after four years of self imposed exile to participate in May 11 general elections. However, the Election Commission of Pakistan rejected his nomination papers and court imposed a permanent ban on him to participate in general elections. The Attorney General, Munir Malik on Monday has submitted in writing the stance of the government in the Supreme Court in treason case against Musharraf. The court gave the federal government three days to submit the steps the government needed to take to bring Musharraf to trial under Article 6 of the constitution of high treason. The Attorney General has to provide detailed line of action on behalf of the government in filing a complaint against Musharraf for his alleged "unconstitutional actions". Nawaz Sharif said that he has ordered the Secretary Interior to formally direct the Director of FIA for constituting a special investigation team to commence "an inquiry and investigations in relation to the acts of General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf of November 3, 2007 that may amount to high treason under Article 6 of the constitution and to finalise as expeditiously as possible the time of action and statement of the case to be put up by the federal government before the Supreme Court." The reply of the prime minister further states, "On the completion of the investigations, the federal government shall file the requisite complaint under section 5 of the Criminal Law Amendment (Special Courts Act, 1976) and take steps to constitute the special court for the trial of the offense". Under article 6 of the constitution, the military strongman if convicted, can face a possible death penalty or life imprisonment.
