Palestinian refuge seekers resume protests in Sweden

A number of Palestinians resumed their protests outside the migration agency in Malmo city south of Sweden to demand the right of refuge in the country amid reports that the police gave them a deadline to leave in the evening otherwise the protest will be ended by force.

Radio Sweden said around 50 Palestinians are currently on hunger strike in Malmö but up to 150 have taken part in a tent protest in the southern Swedish city over the past five weeks.

“They feel tricked,” Åsa Svensson, a spokesperson for the Palestinian protesters, said.

“They thought they would reach some sort of agreement both with the Palestinian embassy and with the Migration Agency. And three people have also had their asylum applications refused,” Svensson said.

The police have said the Palestinians have until noon Tuesday to remove the tents, according to Svensson. She said: “If they’re not gone by then, the police will make sure they are removed. We are meeting with the police soon so we will have to wait and see.”
