Russia against ungrounded attempts to raise issue of sanctions against Syria

Russia categorically denies any ungrounded attempts to raise the issue of using sanctions against Syria, TASS cited Russia's Permanent Representative at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin as saying on Friday.
"We are categorically against any ungrounded attempts to raise the issue of using sanction measures under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter," he said after the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution on the inadmissibility of warfare use of poisonous substances in the Syrian conflict.
The document that was passed by the majority of votes provides for possible imposing of measures under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter in case episodes of the use of chemical weapons in Syria are confirmed.
He said that it was the competence of ruling bodies of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons /OPCW/ to establish and verify episodes of possible violations of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
According to the Russian diplomat, Russia voted in favor of the above resolution proceeding from its "principled position on the inadmissibility of the use of chemical weapons wheresoever."
