Russia and China have used their veto to block a UN Security Council resolution on Syria. Representatives of Russia and China vetoed a U.N. resolution Thursday threatening sanctions against President Bashar Assad's government if it didn't stop using heavy weapons. The Western-backed resolution sought to impose non-military sanctions, under chapter 7 of the UN charter, if the Syrian regime did not withdraw it heavy weapons from the populated areas within 10 days. It was the third time that Russia and China have used their veto power to block U.N. Security Council resolutions on Syria. The vote was held on Thursday, with 11 countries voting in favor, two against while two more abstained.
