Russian warplanes took off from an airbase in western Iran's Hamadan province to conduct an airstrike targeting militants in Syria's Aleppo region, Russia's Defence Ministry said Tuesday.
It was the first time Russian warplanes used an Iranian airbase for military actions in Syria, Russian news agency TASS reported.
The Defence Ministry said in comments that long-range Tu-22M3 bombers and front-line Su-34 bombers that had taken off with a full load of bombs from an airbase in Hamadan conducted a coordinated attack on militant targets in Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor and Idlib provinces.
The deployment would allow the Russian air force to cut flight times by 60% and increase bombing payloads.
Russian media said the Tupolev-22M3 bombers, which had already conducted many strikes on militants in Syria from their home bases in southern Russia, were too large to be accommodated at Russia's air base inside Syria
