Russia seized 10 tons of illegal drugs in 2013

Russian authorities seized about 10 tons of illegal drugs in 2013, 20 percent more than in 2012, an official said Tuesday. The mortality rate among Russian drug users is eight times higher than that in Europe, although it has decreased in the recent six years by 40 percent, said Victor Ivanov, head of the Federal Anti-Drug Service. There are about 8 million drug addicts in Russia. Drug abuse kills 70,000 people every year, most of them under 34 years of age, according to the federal agency.
