Russia: UN council debate on Syria ‘counterproductive’

Tuesday’s debate on Syria at the United Nations Human Rights Council will not help tackle the country’s problems, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov has said. He wrote on his Twitter page that the debate at the Council was counterproductive because it was of a “confrontational nature.” The 47-member forum was expected to condemn Syria for the fourth time for the use of heavy weapons on residential areas and its crackdown on dissent.
