Russia has nearly finished updating automated security systems at some missile bases as a precaution against terrorist attack, a Russian military official says. Nine bases of the Strategic Missile Forces are receiving the modern equipment, RIA Novosti reported. Upgrades are being made to systems for warning and surveillance, detection sensors, fire control and power grids, Col. Vadim Koval, an SMF spokesman, said Wednesday. Rules of engagement and training requirements for security forces at the bases also are being tightened, he said. The SMF operates at least 58 SS-18 Satan ballistic missiles, 160 mobile SS-25 Sickle missile systems, 50 silo-based and 18 mobile SS-27 Sickle-B systems and 18 RS-24 systems.
