Serbs, Hungarians protest anti-migration fence

Representatives of Serbian and Hungarian civic organizations protested near the Serbian northern town of Horgos on Tuesday, urging the Hungarian government to remove the fence between the two countries.

Serbian initiative "No Fences in Europe" and Hungarian "El Camino de Balkan" (the Balkan Route) cut the wire fence on one place, voicing their disagreement with Hungary's reaction to the migrant issue.

The founder of "No Fences in Europe" Milica Mancic said at the railway border crossing between the two countries that the fence had to fall and called for solidarity between Serbia and Hungary and for the humane treatment of refugees.

"It (the fence) is purposeless. Today in Hungary there are more refugees than yesterday, it prevents nobody from doing anything, while people are dying," she said.

Her Hungarian colleague Gyorgy Kakuk said that wars in the countries from which refugees come have to be stopped while the 150 km fence presents an insult to Hungary's neighbors, Serbia as well as Macedonia.

"If we treat refugees like animals, we will also become animals," Kakuk said and cut the fence, only to be instantly arrested by Hungarian police.

According to official data, 115,000 refugees passed across Serbia on their way to the European Union since the beginning of this year. At the moment, 7,800 are in the country and are headed to the Hungarian border on their long journey to Germany and Scandinavian countries.
