Shmakov appointed as head of United Shipbuilding Corporation

Vladimir Shmakov was appointed as head of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (OSK), Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting devoted to the prospects of the OSK development on Tuesday. Putin also noted he hopes that Shmakov will show himself as an efficient manager. Vladimir Shmakov is the first deputy general director of the state-run research-and-development corporation Uralvagonzavod. Despite the fact that, according to the reports of the newspapers, this candidate promoted Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, Shmakov was not linked with the shipbuilding industry up to now. From 1983 he worked at the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant and was engaged in the party propagandistic work: in 1984-1986 he worked as the deputy secretary of the VLKSM committee of the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant, in 1986-1989 - the second secretary of the Magnitogorsk VLKSM committee. From 1996 he worked as the deputy head, then the head of the department of promising development and investment programs, from 2001 as the head of the economic department of the plant. In 2005 Shmakov was appointed as the director for finances and economy of the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant. From 2006 he worked as the vice-president for finances and economy, from 2008 as the vice-president for sales of the management company of the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant. In 2008-2010 he worked as a deputy of the Chelyabinsk Regional Legislative Assembly from United Russia. In May 2011 he was appointed as the first deputy general director of Uralvagonzavod. The joint stock company United Shipbuilding Corporation was established under the Russian presidential decree on March 21, 2007 in order to preserve and develop the scientific-technical potential of the defence industrial complex, ensure security and defence capability of the country, concentrate intellectual, production and financial resources to implement the projects to build ships and submarines for the Navy, develop civilian shipbuilding and develop the continental shelf and the world market of maritime shipments. The full stock of the United Shipbuilding Company is in federal property. The United Shipbuilding Corporation incorporates 116 subsidiaries and independent societies, integrating 60 shipbuilding enterprises, design bureaus, shipyards and machine-building plants, which account for 80% of produce of the domestic shipbuilding industry. In December 2010 OSK with the Finnish subsidiary STX has set up a joint venture, which is specialized in the production of the state-of-the-art marine machinery for the operation in ice conditions. Within the operation of this joint venture in 2013 the ice-class supply ships Vitus Bereng and Alexei Chirikov, which were built in cooperation with the Vyborg shipbuilding plant, were commissioned to the contractor. The independent trend of the OSK operation is the fulfilment of the export contracts within military-technical cooperation. Meanwhile, the share of export supplies in the overall output of naval machinery makes about 20%. The development of the production of civilian ships and marine facilities, special ships and river-sea vessels is also a priority trend of the OSK operation.
