Sisi phones Mexican counterpart on Wahat incident

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El Sisi on Tuesday phoned his Mexican counterpart Enrique Pena Nieto on Monday's Wahat incident.

Presidential spokesman Alaa Yousef said Sisi offered condolences on the death of Mexican tourists in Wahat area in the Western Desert.

Sisi told Nieto that Egypt would provide all needed aid and care to the injured and the families of the victims, the spokesman said.

The president also said that he was personally following up progress in investigations to determine the full circumstances of the incident, the spokesman added.

For his part, Nieto expressed appreciation for Sisi's stance and Egyptian government efforts in support of the victims, the spokesman said.

The two leaders agreed to continue contacts and joint efforts in this regard, affirming the deeply rooted relations between Egypt and Mexico, Yousef said.

Egypt's Interior Ministry announced late Sunday that joint police and army forces mistakenly dealt with four four-by-four vehicles carrying a group of Mexican tourists resulting in the death of 12 persons and the injury of 10 others.

A statement issued by the ministry said the victims were Mexicans and Egyptians, adding that they were rushed to hospital.

The statement said a team of investigators was formed to stand on the reasons behind the accident.
