Son of Ukraine's Crimean Tatar activist found guilty of involuntary manslaughter

The jury in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar has found Khaiser Dzemilev, a son of a Ukrainian parliament member and a Crimean Tatar rights activist, guilty of an involuntary manslaughter, a TASS correspondent reported from the courtroom on Tuesday.

In May 2013 Dzhemilev shot dead his friend Fevzi Edemov in the Crimean town of Bachisaray and is facing up to seven years in jail.

However, prosecutors said they had "presented enough evidence to find the defendant guilty of voluntary manslaughter."

Dzhemilev's case was first investigated in Crimea but was sent to the Russian Supreme Court after the peninsula's reunification with Russia in March 2014. The Supreme Court ruled that the jury trial should take place in Krasnodar.

His father Mustafa Dzhemilev, a former head of the Mejilis (assembly) of the Crimean Tatar people, was later given a five-year entry ban to Russia.
