Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has made a surprise visit to Afghanistan to meet President Hamid Karzai and visit NATO headquarters ahead of Christmas celebrations. Rajoy, accompanied by Defense Minister Pedro Morenes, arrived in Kabul on Saturday for talks with Karzai and to spend Christmas celebrations with Spanish forces. Spain has currently around 1,605 troops under the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in Kabul and western Herat province. All NATO combat forces are due to leave the country by the end of 2014. Rajoy will visit Spanish troops in Herat after meeting soldiers at the NATO headquarters in Kabul.
