Suitcase with guns and ammo found at Mexico City airport

A suitcase containing two firearms and around 30 rounds of ammunition was found at Mexico City's international airport, announced Mexico's National Commission for Security (CNS) on Saturday.

With the help of an X-ray machine, members of the Federal Police detected an object that bore resemblance to a firearm inside the suitcase which had arrived from the United States.

The Federal Police were working in the airport and carrying out inspections and surveillance activities as part of the operation " Summer 2015".

In accordance with protocol, the suitcase was opened in the presence of the international airline supervisors and ministerial authorities.

At the end of the inspection which took place in the airline's offices, two firearms armed with 11 and 10 rounds of ammunition, 13 loose rounds and various personal items were found inside the suitcase.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office kept the arms, chargers and ammunition along with the suitcase in order to continue with the investigation.

During the current holiday period, the Federal Police are carrying out the "Tellurium" operation involving non-intrusive checks to guarantee the safety of passengers traveling in airports, bus stations, ports, tourist centers and border areas.

In the first half of 2015, 2,777 guns, ranging between long and short, were confiscated, according to the National Center for Planning, Analysis and Information to Fight Crime (CENAPI).
