Survivalist at large 7 months after killings of wife, daughters

Authorities say they still get about 30 tips a day about a missing northern California survivalist accused of killing his wife and two daughters in May. U.S. marshals put Shane Franklin Miller, 45, on their "most wanted list" after Miller's 34-year-old wife Sandra and their daughters, 4 and 8, were found shot to death in their home in Shingletown. Their deaths came after Sandra Miller attempted to leave her husband and take the girls with her, police said. A day after the killings, Miller's truck was found in Humboldt County, where he had grown up and where Sandra Miller had fled in her attempt to to get away from her husband. It has a sparse population, few roads and dense forests. A week later, hikers found his dog wandering a trail through the redwoods. Miller was described in a U.S. marshals affidavit as "a survivalist, who frequently uses cash for purchases." Authorities checked out information Miller may have bought property near Seattle or that he was hiding in Mexico. In June, the affidavit says, the search returned to the area around Shingletown and the hills leading to Lassen Volcanic National Park. A search of one of two homes Miller owned in the area turned up a prefabricated bunker containing what investigators called an arsenal of rifles, shotguns and handguns. But Miller wasn't spotted, and there was no indication he had been there since the killings. "We've had all sorts of leads that we've followed up on but had nothing that's panned out," NBC News reported Deputy U.S. Marshal Brandon McMullen of the U.S. Marshals Service said. A $25,000 reward for Miller's capture remained unclaimed, the network said Monday. He is considered armed and dangerous.
