The Syrian air force carried out a raid on Lebanon's northeastern town of Arsal on Wednesday, the state-run National News Agency reported. Three rockets landed in the town's outskirts, causing material damage only, the report said. The latest attack drew the condemnation of Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, who urged Syria to "respect Lebanon's sovereignty and not to endanger its citizens." Other border areas in the north and east of Lebanon have also been struck by frequent cross-border shelling and clashes, while the Syrian government told Lebanon to intensify control over the border to prevent the smuggling of fighters and arms, according to local media. Lebanon is sharply divided over the war in Syria, and Arsal town has turned into a flashpoint as the Syrian refugees, fighters and smugglers have taken the town as a transit point.
