The Western-backed Syrian National Coalition (SNC), the main opposition umbrella group in exile, issued a statement here on Friday, calling for an enforceable UN Security Council resolution regarding the chemical weapons held by the Syrian government. "A UN Security Council resolution on the matter must enforce compliance through clearly defined timelines and consequences," the statement said. Considering the regime's actions, the statement said, this is not something the Syrian people can afford to grant the regime. The statement noted that the Syrian Coalition is deeply skeptical about the Syrian government's signing of the Chemical Weapons Convention on Thursday. The Syrian opposition accused the Syrian government of using chemical weapon in the countryside of the capital Damascus on Aug. 21. However, the Syrian government denied the charges and said chemical weapons were used by rebels.
