The Tajik Parliament has approved a constitutional amendment that would allow current President Emomali Rahmon to retain his post for an unlimited number of consecutive terms, Sputnik news agency reported.
Other amendments to Tajikistan’s Constitution passed this week include lowering the age limit for candidates running for president from 35 to 30 years and the banning of creating political parties that are religious in nature.
The lower house has submitted the approved amendments to the Constitutional Court. A nationwide referendum will be held afterward on whether to adopt constitutional changes.
Rahmon has been serving as president of the Central Asian state since 1994. The 63-year-old politician was elected for the fourth time three years ago. The president is married and has nine children.
