Terrorist structures promote influence among the Syrian opposition, Russian presidential envoy for international cooperation on counter-terrorism Alexander Zmeyevsky said on Monday. “The interest by Al Qaeda and other terrorist structures like as Jabhar al Nusra in Syria arouses serious concern. We also voice concern over their plans to turn Syria into the main foothold in the Middle East in order to spread terrorism to other states. Amidst their growing influence it is extremely important to consolidate our position,” Zmeyevsky said. “Unfortunately, recently certain Western countries have hampered proposals in the U.N. Security Council to condemn terrorist acts and threats in the context of the Syrian events. This runs counter the resolutions of the U.N. Security Council and the U.N. General Assembly to condemn terrorist acts whoever and wherever they are committed,” Zmeyevsky said.
