''The red line has already been crossed,'' Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi said at an informal meeting of foreign ministers here on Friday. ''The EU must focus on stopping these terrible massacres, which have reached unbelievable levels of violence, and which risk destabilizing neighboring countries. I believe the EU is concentrating more and more on the Syrian crisis, both on the humanitarian front and on security issues.'' Assad's possible use of chemical weapons ''is totally unacceptable and would have immediate consequences, the nature of which some important NATO member countries have already anticipated,'' the minister added.
