
The Thai government announced Tuesday that it was imposing a state of emergency for 60 days in Bangkok and parts of nearby provinces. The decision was prompted by anti-government protests that were calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. The protests have reportedly blocked vital parts in Bangkok. In response, the Prime Minister called for elections on February 2. Things escalated however after the anti-government protestors were attacked by explosives and firearms. Both the government and the protestors accuse each other of plotting the attack. Some 28 people were injured Sunday as a result of the attack. (QNA)
