US President Donald Trump on Sunday called North Korean President Kim Jong-un a "pretty smart cookie" for holding on to power at a very early age.
"People are saying, 'Is he sane?' I have no idea," Trump said in a US television interview. "But he was a young man of 26 or 27... when his father died. He's dealing with obviously very tough people, in particular the generals and others." Trump said that at a "very young age, he was able to assume power. A lot of people, I'm sure, tried to take that power away, whether it was his uncle or anybody else. And he was able to do it. So obviously, he's a pretty smart cookie." Last week Trump said that a "major, major war" between the US and North Korea was possible, but that he preferred a diplomatic solution.
On Sunday Trump said he would not reveal his hand in dealing with the crisis. "We shouldn't be announcing all our moves," he said. "It is a chess game. I just don't want people to know what my thinking is." Tensions between North Korea and the United States have risen to their highest point in years as Trump institutes a more aggressive policy towards Pyongyang's banned nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
