Turkey's election board proposes November 1 for snap election

Turkey's high election board has proposed Nov. 1 as a date for possible snap parliamentary elections, ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) officials told local media on Thursday.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu formally ended attempts to find a junior coalition partner on Tuesday, after weeks of futile talks with opposition parties.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday that he had no intention of giving a mandate to form a government to the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).

The deadline for parties to form a coalition government ends on Aug. 23, a deadline that Erdogan said he would not extend.

According to the country's constitution, after consulting with the speaker of parliament, the president can call an early election after the time allotted for coalition talks expires.

The AKP lost its overall majority in the June 7 polls for the first time since it came to power in 2002, forcing it to seek a coalition partner.
